In the present Project, a platform for open data has been designed and implemented for the storage, management, and dissemination of digital tourism and cultural content related to the Region of Crete. This platform provides the opportunity for both legal and natural persons to contribute content with appropriate licensing.
Specifically, concerning legal entities, the platform aims to address the phenomenon that many public bodies do not have access to the data generated or collected by other public bodies. The same phenomenon can be observed within the same entity, especially in large municipalities where many services generate data either through their operation or through their participation in co-funded programs. Finally, due to this huge dispersion and disjointedness of content, it does not efficiently reach the citizens.
Additionally, concerning natural persons, the platform enables, through the utilization of crowd sourcing techniques from smart portable devices as well as the internet, the contribution of tourist content with the aim of creating a collection of open data for Crete. In the case of natural persons, the platform leverages User Generated Content (UGC) technologies in combination with user communities for the evaluation, rating, and categorization of content.
The main objective of the Project is to create a unified infrastructure of open data for the preservation and cataloging of digital content for the Region of Crete, as well as a comprehensive infrastructure for the acquisition and distribution of content by end users using crowd sourcing techniques. Additionally, the platform incorporates a suitable content licensing system and allows its dissemination and distribution both to local entrepreneurship and to public bodies and citizens.
In terms of interoperability, the content management and distribution platform supports: • Open standards and appropriate APIs to ensure interoperability with existing and new municipal infrastructures as well as third parties • Interoperable authentication subsystem with the services platform and graded access to digital content • Ability for direct integration of applications with the repository for real-time content retrieval
