OPEN DATA PLATFORM FOR STORAGE, MANAGEMENT, AND DISSEMINATION OF DIGITAL TOURISM AND CULTURAL CONTENT RELATED TO THE REGION OF CRETE

The current project has designed and implemented a platform for open data storage, management, and dissemination of digital tourism and cultural content related to the region of Crete. This platform allows both legal and natural persons to contribute content with appropriate licensing.

Specifically, regarding legal entities, the platform aims to address the phenomenon where many public entities lack access to data generated or collected by other public bodies. This same issue may be observed within the same entity, particularly in large municipalities where many services generate data either through their operations or participation in co-funded programs. Finally, due to the extensive dispersion and disconnectedness of content, it does not efficiently reach citizens. Additionally, concerning natural persons, the platform enables the contribution of tourism content through the utilization of crowd-sourcing techniques from smart portable devices and the internet, aiming to create a collection of open data for Crete. In the case of natural persons, the platform utilizes User Generated Content (UGC) technologies in combination with user communities to evaluate, rate, and categorize content.

The main goal of the project is to create a unified infrastructure for open data to maintain and catalog digital content for the region of Crete, as well as a comprehensive infrastructure for content acquisition and dissemination from end users using crowd-sourcing techniques. Moreover, the platform incorporates an appropriate content licensing system and allows for its dissemination and provision to both local businesses, public entities, and citizens.

In terms of interoperability, the platform for managing and disseminating selected digital content supports:

Open standards and suitable APIs to ensure interoperability with existing and new municipal infrastructures and third parties. Interoperability authentication subsystem with the platform's service and graded access to digital content. Direct application integration with the repository for real-time content retrieval. The overall solution proposed by this proposal is expected to build a repository platform supporting:

  • Internal content management and cataloging subsystem.
  • User role and authorization subsystem.
  • Application for licensing requests for content.
  • Licensing and authorization subsystem for interoperability services.
  • Search and navigation subsystem for digital content for end-users, organizations, and businesses.
  • Crowd-sourcing infrastructure:
  • Application for smart portable devices, user communities, and end-users to gather content.
  • Content dissemination infrastructure:
  • Electronic travel guide for smart portable devices for disseminating content to citizens and visitors to Crete.
